“The lights dimmed and the concert began in near total darkness as the orchestra played Charles Ives’ eerie “The Unanswered Question.” Out of the darkness, DiDo- nato repeatedly vocalized five notes of the music, normally played by a trumpet, as she slowly walked from the back of the theatre, past members of the audience and up onto the large round platform at centre stage where pieces of two large circles lay scattered about. According to the program notes, the composition poses the eternal question of our existence. DiDonato seemed like Eve or Mother Nature walking through the Garden of Eden, wondering how this world was created.
Indeed, the next selection, “The First Morning of the World” by Rachel Portman, echoed that sentiment. The audience was spellbound.”
